Jack Murphy
Photographer | Visual Artist | Educator

Jack is an Australian photographer, visual artist and educator making work predominantly with analogue photographic materials ranging from large format film to camera-less photography.

His primary photographic work seeks to embody a sense of stillness which fringes on the world of dreams. Being colourblind, he is often looking to portray colour in alternative ways which challenge standard perceptions and offer elements of surrealism. While his teaching practice seeks to reconnect students with traditional photo-making techniques.

Jack has a background in devised theatre-making which has fostered a love of collaboration evident in ‘Polaroids, 2021.’ This was a participatory project where photographic techniques were explored to produce a living, breathing body of work created through collaborating with audiences.

Furthermore, Jack ran a small-time art company, ‘Canvas Collective’ (2021-2023) which aimed to bridge the creative mediums & redistribute autonomy to creatives by offering platforms to share & exhibit work with a focus on accessibility, collaboration, and community.

He has been producing and exhibiting in group shows of this nature for the past two years at local Melbourne / Naarm venues including The Contemporary Centre for Photography, The Old Bar Gallery, Off The Kerb & Backwoods Gallery.
